"'We're having grave robbings all over,' said Gaerin. 'I went out and looked at three in Alpine last week.' People talk about torchlit processions in the Japatul area, animal mutilations and other satanist-type activity in the East County. Gaerin, without giving details, said he knows of active witches' covens in the area. 'I know there is activity that goes on in almost all areas of the country', said the deputy. "Some of these membership lists would contain the names of prominent people. Under the freedom of religion rights, they have the right to practice the worship of Satan, and law enforcement won't get involved in that. But when satanists start committing crimes in connection with their worship, then it becomes a problem, Gaerin said. 'And that kind of (criminal) activity surrounds this group frequently', said the officer".(54)
"...Satanism isn't the forgiving religion most people encounter at their place of worship, said Gaerin. 'Within the framework of the covens, you screw up and you could lose your life, in a very horrible way,' he said. 'Their level of commitment is survival, and it has to be very deep to survive'. It is impossible to separate any discussion of satanism from Christianity because Satan worship is designed to be the exact opposite, said Gaerin
This part of the manual is illustrated with reproductions of medieval woodcuts from the period of the Inquisition, with captions such as: "The witch and the demon", "Satan in bonds", "Condemned souls carried to their place of punisment" and "The Demon of the Treasure." There is also a photograph of a rock somewhere with an "X" spray painted on it captioned "Satanic cross painted on a rock" and another photo of some graffiti on a wall in Santee, California, depicting an inverted cross and which reads: "He who dwells within this land dwells within the devils hand."
