Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder that any of these fun places we may visit, we are a guest at. Please treat both businesses and trails with the utmost respect. We here at Hidden San Diego follow the 'Leave no Trace' mantra, meaning whatever you bring with you comes back with you. If you see trash on a trail, please do your part to help remove it. Remember, we are not picking up trash from another person but instead cleaning up for Mother Nature. Happy adventures!

About Hosp Grove:

Hosp Grove was founded by a group of investors called The Hosp Eucalyptus Corp in 1908. They planted 219 acres of trees in this Carlsbad grove hoping they could be harvested & sold to the Santa Fe Railroad as railroad ties. Unfortunately, eucalyptus is a brittle wood and cracks easily, therefore was unsuitable.

Since the beginning, much of the grove has been sold off, but what remains are fun, forested trails with plenty of inclines and twists & turns. Part of the trail is parallel to the Buena Vista Lagoon and offers great views. In November monarch butterflies can be seen in the eucalyptus trees after migrating from northern regions.

While you’re in the area, make sure to visit Leo Carrillo Ranch nearby!

Personal Experience

This was a pleasant hike. There are plenty of inclines for building endurance and if you go in winter or spring it should be nice and green. There is nothing ground-breaking about this area that we found, but pleasant nonetheless. This is a big area so there are plenty of other trails that we didn’t explore.

There were some cool BMX jumps here:

There was an extremely horrifying murder here back in 2020.  A lady that was new to the area was walking alone one morning and stabbed to death by a 17-year-old boy.  There is a sweet memorial where she was killed:

But what really perplexed me is this second memorial a few yards away for a completely different female.  I tried to look up if there was anything about another female who died here but couldn’t find anything:

This little strip of the hike quickly turned into what felt like a death row because a bit further down the trail from the other two memorials was this memorial for someone’s dog”
