The northern portion of Black's Beach is owned and managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. The south end of the beach is owned by the city of San Diego and the state park. This distinction is important as Black’s Beach is most known as a nude beach, a practice that is no longer permitted in the southern portion managed by the city of San Diego.
The beach was named after the Black family who once had a farm over-looking the beach. When they sold the land, it was subdivided into La Jolla Farms lots. There are many mansions that sit above the beach including the home where Jonas Salk once lived.
You will oftentimes see people playing volleyball in the nude right upon entering the beach as a warm welcoming. Usually if you park it near the trailhead, you will be cleared from any creepy experiences. The further north you go and the more secluded it becomes, the more you open yourself up to possible strange incidences.
Come here with an open mind and be courteous to those cnjoying themselves in the buff. This is one of the most beautiful beaches we have in San Diego and great for surfing.
Check out the Mushroom House while you're out here! It's one of San Diego's most interesting architectural designs!
This is one rough hike back up unless you're in great shape! Get ready to get a workout!
