Indian Flats Campground is a 17-site campground in the Cleveland National Forest near the Pacific Crest Trail. The campground lies at a 3,600 ft. elevation and is highly secluded. You will get great views of Lake Henshaw and Palomar Mountain.
There is a short trail from the campground to the East Fork of the San Luis Rey River, where you will find shallow pools and a seasonal waterfall.
Campground closure: Indian Flats Campground closes for the months of April and May in order to protect the habitat of the endangered arroyo toad during its active season. The specific closure dates may vary from year to year, so check with the national forest before making a visit in the spring.
Personal Experience: I am putting this spot up for the 7 mile, winding drive up the mountain. I have not camped here although I may one day. The drive is serene enough and an ideal spot to watch the sunset if you have ventured up to Warner Springs for the day.
This is a great drive to clear your mind and just enjoy nature all around you. You will be out in the thick of it with no reception so make sure you come prepared with food, water and emergency supplies in case your car breaks down! There is an endless backyard for hiking and exploring too. Who knows what secrets lay in these hills! I must note that I have only explored this area in the winter so I cannot speak of what it is like in the summer.
