Hike: There are many trails that go throughout many towns through this trailhead

Level:Easy but you can go for many hours if you want

Personal Experience: Perhaps I am biased because I grew up across the street from this canyon in Serra Mesa.  After visiting Sandrock Canyon the other day, I am still convinced that it is special. The canyon is maintained with love and filled with beautiful plants and flowers that are not usually seen in a San Diego canyon.  Like any hike, the best time to explore is springtime when all the flowers are blooming!

We have found several "slot canyons" created from faulty pipelines.  Obviously these are not safe to explore, but we took our chances.  They are pretty cool inside.  I would still recommend just looking at our photos and not exploring them yourselves as they could further collapse at any time:
